ONLF Information Bureau Concludes a Seminar in Denmark.
The ONLF Information Bureau has today concluded a three day seminar in Copenhagen, Denmark. The aim of the seminar was to train the staff of the Information Bureau, who comprised mostly of editors and reporters based in Europe, and to boost their capacity and effectiveness. Experts on the field of media, communications, public relations and advocacy addressed the seminar.
High level ONLF leaders attended the seminar and gave valuable lectures about the Political Program of the movement, the history of the Ogaden struggle, organizational behaviour and discipline.
The participants of the seminar learned about media ethics in general, latest news gathering and interview conducting techniques, video productions and documentary making programs. A particular emphasis was placed on how to synchronize media regulations and the aims of the struggle while at the same time countering the media propaganda campaign of the Ethiopian regime. The effect of the Ethiopian regime’s illegal media jamming practices was also analysed and creative techniques to circumvent it explored.
The seminar reviewed the dire situation of the media landscape in Ogaden and how the Ethiopian regime had closed the region to local and international media with the aim being: (1) to prevent factual news concerning the Ogaden peoples’ struggle for freedom from reaching the international arena and to hide the human rights violations which the Ethiopian army and their affiliated militias are committing daily in Ogaden; (2) to create a false image of peace and development in Ogaden and market it to the Ogaden Diaspora communities and the international community.
The participants explored ways to break the regime’s media blockade in Ogaden and combat its media propaganda campaign.
The seminar ended successfully by setting benchmarks and making commitments to regularly review progress made.
