IHASA sponsored event: Why nobody cares about the Ogaden region (and what can be done about it)
DESCRIPTION:
The Ogaden region has a long history of violence and resistance. While Somalis in northeast Kenya are increasingly identifying with the Kenyan nation-state, relatively few Somalis in Ethiopia consider themselves as dignified Ethiopian citizens. Despite EPRDF’s promises of
democratization and development, many Somalis feel marginalized. To make things worse, the ongoing insurgency by the ONLF, the harsh repression by the Ethiopian army, and the creation of the Liyu police have caught many civilians between a rock and a hard place. Despite ongoing clashes, human rights abuses, and displacement, donors who support Ethiopia have turned a blind eye to the region. This evening will be dedicated to discussing some of the root causes of the ongoing conflict as well as opportunities to generate international attention and, ultimately, overcome the conflict.
