ROOTS – a poem by Abdirisaq Aden Muhumad (Ridding on Xiin Finiin)

When ups become downs
Downs become ups
I surrender not to my enemies
I wait for rainy seasons
Head not soiled with sands
Hanging on my roots
Roots
No wind shakes
No flood uproots
Roots
Withstanding earth quakes
Roots running into centuries

I behave not like leaves in dry seasons
I refuse to fall
Resisting the scorching sun
Reflecting the poisonous rays
Reliving the pasts
Rebuffing injustices
Revising lines of histories
Resuscitating memories
For posterity
I retell “our” stories

I voice my voices
Below the valleys
Over the mountains
In between the forests
Ridding on Xiin Finiin
I fight for what is rightfully mine
I fight for freedom
With fermented milk
I for so many years flourish
With known land marks
I milk my camels……….
