Ogaden Community Association of Sweden (OCAS) welcomes the release of the Swedish journalists Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson from Ethiopian prison.
The two journalists were arrested 1st of July 2011 while on their way to Ogaden to investigate and report on the activities of Lundin Petroleum in Ogaden and the oil exploration related human rights abuses taking place there. The journalists were later put on show trial and convicted of trumped charge of ‘supporting terrorism’ and sentenced to 11 years imprisonment.
Much of the evidence used to convict the journalists relied on a staged video and forced confession obtained under duress. (The Swedish TV had recently broadcasted the original version of the staged video which was used to convict Martin Schibbye and Johan Persson. The video was smuggled out of Ethiopia by the man who compiled it, Abdullahi Hassan.) This is how the Ethiopian regime frames innocent Ogaden civilians and convicts them.
