Amin Arts draws a cartoon about the recent massacre in Qoriile
The famous Somali cartoonist Amin Amir (Amin Arts) has drawn a cartoon depicting the recent massacre of civilians in Miir-danbas, near the town of Qoriile in Doollo province.
The Ethiopian troops gunned down more than 17 people last week in Miir-danbas and detained 30 others. The whereabouts of the detained persons are still unknown. Most are believed to have been summarily executed. The massacred civilians included children as young as seven months old and their mothers. The majority of the victims were closely related families.
In this cartoon, the old man on the far left side of the drawing asks his colleague, “Why are these people hanged from trees and massacred?” His friend aptly replies: “It is pure aggression. These people are being killed for refusing to cry when Meles Zenawi died.”
Amin Amir is known to pull no punches and to tell the truth it as it without fear or favor. He draws cartoons that summarize complex issues into a coherent whole, with precision and wittiness. His drawings are often hilarious and funny, combined with ridicule and condemnation for unscrupulous politicians.
Although Mr. Amin’s cartoon paintings generally cover the whole Somali peninsula, his drawing about the Ethiopian colonized Somalis in Ogaden often feature the real truth on the ground and how the Ethiopian army is violating the human rights of those Somalis. And for that, we’re thankful to him.
