San Diego, California: The 2nd annual Walk to End Genocide campaign was held on April 14,2013 inLos Angeles,California. Last week the same event was held in San Diego and was attended by the Ogaden Youth & Student Union of San Diego. The purpose of these events is to raise awareness, to advocate, and to educate about the horrors of genocide around the world.

OYSU and the Ogaden American Society of San Diego a Somali Community from the Ogaden region were once again invited to attend theLos Angelescampaign. The determined group led by the Chairman of the Ogaden American Society Mr. Abdinasir Abdullahi Farah and the president of OYSU San Diego Mr. MohamedNoor Mohamud Abdi departed early morning with a convoy of vehicles and message to deliver.

The event had about 4,000 attendees and over 30 organizations including human rights organizations, humanitarian aid agencies and NGO’s.

Among the attendees this year was the OYSU Los Angeles a newly formed branch, made up of former OYSU Denver members who recently moved to theLos Angelesarea. Mr. Ilyas the president told us that they were very happy and honored to be part of the event and are looking forward to working with OYSU San Diego as well as the rest of the OYSU Worldwide branches.

The groups had the opportunity to share with the thousands of the attendees the hidden genocide and the plight of the people in the Ogaden region. That was what was exactly depicted in a heartfelt poem by Munira Da’la of OYSU San Diego that had the crowds clinging to every single word.

Walk to End Genocide together with OYSU hope to take one step closer to a world without genocide.

OYSU San Diego will continue to raise awareness about the genocide in the Ogaden region throughoutCaliforniacolleges and Universities. Please join them as they urge theUSgovernment as well as the international community to investigate crimes against the civilians of the Ogaden by the Ethiopian military and to hold theAddis Ababaregime accountable.
