For the past 20 years Dr. Hawa Abdi and her daughters, Dr. Deqa Mohamed and Dr. Amina Mohamed, have been living , working and housing Somalia internally displaced people.  On Saturday March 26, 2011, Dr. Abdi and Dr. Mohamed were present at a fundraiser in their honor.

African Rights Monitor (ARM) offered these selfless ladies a platform to describe the services they provide to over 90 000 people with limited resources.  The nearly 250 attendants of the fundraisers listened intently to the difficult choices these ladies face daily. Decisions such as: Which life to save? Who to help? Which family to feed? Which child will receive the last vaccination?

Dr. Abdi & Dr. Mohamed continued to save lives even after their home/clinic was destroyed by the warlords.  With the help of the Somali diaspora and the media the warlords were have kept at bay.

Dr.  Abdi described the difficulty of practicing medicine in a battle zone, and being at risk of HIV/AID infection due to the lack of testing equipment and time to screen each patient.

Dr. Abdi & Dr. Mohamed expressed it is with the help of donations and continued support that their work can carry on.

The fundraiser event concluded on a positive note, renewing the philanthropic spirits of Dr. Abdi, Dr. Mohamed, and all who attended.

ARM will continue supporting the Dr. Hawa Abdi Foundation.  If you like to more information on how you can help Dr. Hawa please visit their site.
