Ethiopian Prime Minister makes his annual trip to the United Nations General Assembly in NY this week. Meles, has the dubious distinction of ruthlessly repressing his people and stealing elections shamelessly.

The US, along with the rest of the international community, continues to bear witness to the Ogaden people’s courageous pursuit of universal rights in the face of appalling brutality — all at the hands of an Ethiopian government and its ruthless Dictator that increasingly dishonours its own people. The international community must stop turning a blind eye to this abuse.
The General Assembly should seize this opportunity to reaffirm its Support for universal Human Rights, and here I will put the emphasis on the word “Universal” as this requires should be applied to all.

It seems that US and UN Human Rights Organizations use selective measures to pressure Governments and leaders to put an end to Human Rights abuses.

For instance, US and UN has taken tangible steps to hold Iranian and Syrian governments accountable for their deplorable Human Rights record, they even supported the establishment of a UN special office , implemented targeted sanctions that aim to punish officials implicit in human rights abuses, and increased their public condemnation of these governments, while at the same time completely ignoring the Ethiopian Government’s gross Human Rights violations in Ogaden (This is well documented by Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and UN itself) in fact Ethiopia is rewarded with more Military and Non-military aid. US and UN diplomats must stand with those who seek to protect their basic human rights regardless of their geopolitical importance.

Now is the time for US and UN to live up to those principles by reaffirming that they are equivocally on the side of democratic reform and greater respect for human rights throughout the world. they should underline the urgency for the fulfillment of the principles set forth in the United Nations Charter “to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person…”. The world must pursue policies that advance respect for universal principles everywhere.
