Based on her recent actions, she can now be described as a cadre and political activist. On the Eid Al-Adxa day (November 07, 2011), she was interviewed by the staunchly pro-Abdi Iley Universal TV; and there she was, boring everyone with false pictures about the region and greetings and felicitations to the dear ‘President’. You would have thought the girl was sending love missives to a lover in distant lands if you see the obsequiousness and redundancy of the compliments.

Wardheernews – We are in the new age where pride has become foolishness; struggle pointless; and sycophancy wisdom. And as usual, art has joined the bootlicking industry without shame, without fear. It is a worrying time. Why a young and talented singer, who has grown in a climate of freedom and democracy abroad, would bless tyrannical subjugation of her own helpless people is beyond logic! Is it the jingles of coins or just mistaken jingoism? Or are we supposed to take her fiendish bootlicking as irrelevant tirades that do not deserve denunciation, on account of her age and girly naivety? No, it is not her age or sex that matter. It is the mantle of an artist that she carries that defines her, more than her inexorable biological dispositions. And age and sex cannot shield her from sharp rebuke when she crosses the frontiers of decency.

Clearly, she is not just a singer who happens to agree with the ‘peace’ and ‘development’ the Somali region is enjoying. There is no harm in doing that. She is entitled to her views. But she invites censure when she puts politics before art. Nimco said the people of the Somali region are drinking peace for breakfast, milk for lunch and honey for dinner. And that they are living in prosperity under the benevolent leadership of President Abdi Iley. This account doesn’t go with the findings of numerous Human Right and Humanitarian agencies. We trust the reports of qualified agencies over the maudlin sentiment of a juvenile traditional rapper. The young singer should stop and think about the implications of what she is saying.

Universal TV

In her own interest as a young singer, Nimco Dareen should learn from the mistakes of some of Africa’s great sons. At young age, Professor Ali Mazrui defended and advised Ugandan despots Milton Obote and Idi Amin. The infamy he reaped from such association with evil men still haunts him in the form of hostile questions, ridicules and boycotts. Such youthful indiscretion is probably what led Professor Wole Soyinka to castigate Mazrui for alleged “political and intellectual charlantry” and to label him “a confused son of Arab slave owners and not an authentic African voice”.

Age is on Nimco Dareen’s side and she may rue her blatant bootlicking tomorrow as the colonizers and stooges she sings for go like all before them, and today’s oppressed people finally get their voice.

Universal TV has long ago taken its side in this struggle between freedom and oppression, between principle and coins, and has opted for short term gains over professionalism. In typical W.C. Fields fashion, it failed to dazzle its viewers with brilliance, and hence has opted to baffle them with bullshit!” The TV is nowadaysys not only an apologist of Ethiopian tyranny and aggression against the Somaligalbeed people; it is an actor in the sense that it is openly used to propagate lies against the legitimate struggle of the Somaligalbeed people. The oppressed people will not forget nor forgive this crime, and the face of this propaganda machine is Engineer Ahmed Abubaker, a confused son, for whom business comes first and Somalinimo last. This is the truth and the truth shall be said whatever tenuous chords may snap. And he should not feel he can cash on the misery of our people indefinitely without consequences.

By choosing to grace this TV and agreeing to present false picture about the Somali Region, Nimco Dareen has convicted the thousands of raped Somali women and those languishing in prisons and refugee camps as liars. She ate and danced joyfully in Jigjiga and may therefore think she ate and danced for all. The people whose suffering she denied must reciprocate by denying her the title of artist she so covets – she is a political cadre after all, and by boycotting her music and shows. She is like a grape that grew and got ripe inside a toilet! We all enjoyed her debut song “Dareen ax ku bilaabmay”, but we soon may start cursing that melody as “Dareen uf ku bilaabmay” if she doesn’t change course.

Amina Musse Weheliye of Universal TV

The whole interview episode between her and Amina Weheliye of Universal TV, who sounded more like an excited gossip-teller than a journalist, was disgusting. In what was meant to encourage Nimco Dareen to get on with her taunts againstthe oppressed people of Somali region, Amina reminded Nimco of the latter’s purported words that “those who write from pulpits in dark rooms cannot harm anyone”.  That must have sounded a robust punch-line for Amina, but it was a dilatory sound bite.

Amina clearly mistakes sound bites for truism. Perhaps she meant those who write from dark houses cannot influence the amount of money Nimco gets through sellout musical career. She is right on that. But she is wrong if she thinks the social verdict of the Somali people is irrelevant to an aspiring singer. The depreciation in the profession of Somali Journalism is disquieting. As for Somali artists, it is a sad history that most tend to side with tyrants and dance with the ruling wind. Nimco is a mere addition to this roll of shame.

well personally being a person who hails from that region and being supporter of peace in that region i was disgusted with what both NIMCO DAREN and universak t,v are doing and the fake image they aim to create in our minds. we all acknowledge the insecurity, mutilation and the lack of development that exists in the region, question will then come who are the perpetrators ? to me both are held of responsible
