A community leader and activist has been brutally murdered by the Ethiopian security forces on Friday morning 25 January 2008. Mr Abdi Sultan Bihi an advocate of human rights and peace in the Ogaden was shot dead by Ethiopian security forces outside his home in Awaare. 10 members of his family members were taken to Kiflator the headquarters of the military.
last year tens of thousands of people were killed by the Ethiopian army in the region and hundred of thousands were arrested by the Ethiopian security forces.
A close member of Sultan’s family told ONA news agency he had problems with the Ethiopian military because of his position in the Community. Several times the Ethiopian security threatened him and issued warnings that they will arrest or even kill him if he does not cooperate with the authority. Mr Abdi Sultan was an outspoken educated man and advocated for peace and the rule of law.
A witness told ONA the Ethiopian Security forces intensified their wage of war on civilians, rural villagers and communities particularly targeting community leaders like Mr Abdi Sultan who they believe is  a source of inspiration for the resistance movement in the Ogaden Region.
