The local Ogaden Somali community and civil society bodies are urged to attend a solidarity conference on Sunday to discuss the concealed genocide occurring in the Ogaden region in eastern Ethiopia. The event will also commemorate Ogaden Massacre Day, which is being observed by Ogadeni communities worldwide. The  conference was called by the Ogaden Community of South Africa (OCSA), Ogaden Youth and Students Union (OYSU) and the Somali Association of South Africa (SASA).

According to SASA provincial coordinator, Mohamed Aden, the urgency of the conference is in response to the alleged killings of 35 civilians in the Gunagado district of Degahbur region from 12 – 20 February. He said innocent civilians died at the hands of Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi’s security forces. “This is a new tide of violence being unleashed against civilians in Ogaden and no media is allowed in the country because of what’s happening in the region. This is a humanitarian issue and we are making people aware of the killings taking place in Ethiopia,” he said.

The Ogaden people are fighting for freedom as Minister Zenawi continues to order the killings, rape and kidnappings of innocent people. Aden believes the world has turned a blind eye to the war torn Ogaden. The conference will present visuals and audio clips of victims that had been massacred by the Ethiopian government.  He pleaded with all organisations to attend the event to advovate for change in the region.

“We hope to launch an awareness programme and hope the Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) will come to the conference. We will also examine the role of the African Union and South Africa in supporting the Ogadeni cause and upholding human rights in the region,” Aden added. The conference will be held at the Small & Weltevreden Street, Bellville, and Opposite Bellville Post Office at 5pm on Sunday 26 February.
